And the Arrow of Time - for Ezekiel Jones
They'd managed to get him away from the family business, which was no small feat, considering how stubborn he was.
Well, it was mostly Lamia's fault.
They'd noticed him when he turned down the scholarships, and they'd done an excellent job in analyzing his personality, going so far as to plan to blackmail his father to destroy their business if he didn't help them. They needed someone as clever as Librarian, after encountering one too many impossible-to-decipher ancient dead languages. Several years later, when a dissatisfied and lonely Jacob was publishing paper after paper under multiple ffake names, Lamia approached him.
Turns out they didn't need the blackmail after all.
He wasn't really that big on magic, not at first. More trouble than it was worth. But when Lamia was mortally wounded and healed by an artifact wielded by Dulaque, well. Okay, yeah, he could see the benefits.
Maybe it could change lives like his own. Free people who were just as trapped as he was.
Change the world.
So he did what he did best--and that included not only working in his own Serpent-Brotherhood-funded artifact research lab, which was, y'know, amazing--he went out into the field, often with Lamia, to take what they needed.
Right now she was on a mission in Belgium, which he wanted to come with but Dulaque insisted he head to Portland.
Which was where he was now, sneaking into the Library--that place always infuriated him. All that knowledge, hidden away? All those artifacts! They could be used to help people, help save the world. He hates this place. Dulaque told him about the 'security system', and Jacob was clever enough to outwit it.
Or maybe the Library just let him in.
It was in the wee hours of the night, and Jacob, dressed all in black, slips quietly into the Annex through the doors. Snake tattoos are visible curling up by his wrists and neck, and there's smudged liner under his eyes.
Just get in, grab the books, and get out. No big deal.
